FOLLOW JESUS IN BAPTISM
having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith
Colossians 2:12
A STEP OF OBEDIENCE
Baptism is what many people call the first step of obedience in following Jesus. You don’t need to get your life in perfect order or know all the ins-and-outs of Scripture before you are baptized. Jesus himself was baptized “to fulfill all righteousness” and later instructed his followers to multiply by baptizing others.
Water baptism is an outward sign of an inward reality. When we come to faith in Jesus, by his Spirit, we receive new life. Our identity is now in him. The old ways of living should be put to death since Jesus died for them, while the new ways of living should be put on since Jesus was raised to give us new life.
A PUBLIC DECLARATION
As we publicly identify with the death and resurrection of Jesus, we are also publicly declaring that we trust in Jesus’ work to save us and that we intend, by his help, to follow after him in the newness of life.
As you declare your identity with Christ, you also declare your identity with his people who are the Church. You confess that you will give and receive care within the body of a local church as we walk in newness of life together.
Baptism is for those who have trusted in Jesus and desire to follow after Him
